When childcare at home solves a real problem
Home care removes the morning drop-off journey. That can matter with a baby and a school-age sibling on different schedules. A nanny can combine agreed collections, but needs enough paid time to do so. Looking after a sleeping baby while collecting another child elsewhere requires a safe, explicitly agreed arrangement.
Working from home creates its own questions. Where can the children play during calls? Who responds when a child sees a parent and wants their attention? Agree on rooms and handovers. Being inside the house does not make a parent available to provide care.
One familiar caregiver helps only if the relationship works. Check references with consent and discuss actual daily situations. Plan suitable opportunities to meet other children without expecting a nanny to reproduce nursery life or fill every day with outings.
When a childminder or nursery is a better fit

Example B: a baby is at home and an older sibling finishes school at lunchtime. The family needs three long days and several handovers. A nanny could bring those tasks together if journeys and naps can be handled safely. A childminder offering suitable school collection remains worth investigating.
Example C: regular childcare works, but two evenings each month are uncovered. An experienced babysitter with a clear briefing and confirmed availability is a proportionate response. Your worksheet: deal-breakers before preferences
Copy the table into your notes and complete the middle column before approaching providers. Mark each option fits, unresolved or does not fit. An impossible collection cannot be balanced out by attractive rooms.

Clarify administration and the employer role early
Directly employing a nanny generally brings registration, social insurance and payroll responsibilities. A placement introduction alone does not automatically transfer those duties. Nor does calling a role babysitting decide its legal treatment. Clarify the actual arrangement before work begins.
For any model, ask in writing who contracts with you, who pays the caregiver, who receives absence notifications and who decides on replacement care. With an agency, also establish which checks and replacement services the mandate includes and which create extra charges.
