The short answer

The cost of a nanny in Switzerland includes more than gross pay. A family must budget for employer contributions, the family allowance fund, administration, accident insurance and, depending on annual pay, occupational pension cover. There is no single Swiss hourly rate for every nanny. Start with the pay you agree and show every additional cost as a separate line.

An hourly figure answers only part of the budget question. Regular hours, agreed gross pay, paid absences and the duties of a private household employer determine the real cost.

This guide provides a traceable 2026 plan. Pay used in examples is explicitly assumed, not a market rate or recommendation. A real payroll calculation must consider the nanny's age, contract, canton, insurer and residence status.

How to use this budget guide

We separate official 2026 figures from costs that depend on the family and contract. This shows what can be calculated now and which quotations are still needed.

  • Hours: Regular weekly hours are annualised over 52 weeks and divided by 12.
  • Pay basis: The example begins with freely assumed gross pay and makes no market-rate or minimum-wage claim.
  • Mandatory costs: AHV/IV/EO, unemployment, accident and possible pension cover are treated separately.
  • Open amounts: Variable rates stay open until the responsible fund, insurer or pension provider confirms them.

From hourly pay to monthly gross pay

For a stable schedule, use hourly pay × weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12. This gives an average monthly amount across the year and prevents school holidays or different month lengths from distorting the plan.

Example assumption, not a market rate: CHF 35 gross for 24 hours a week equals CHF 3,640 gross per month. In this annualised monthly-pay model, paid holiday is included within the 52 weeks. The contract must state holiday scheduling, extra hours and any thirteenth salary. A genuine hourly-pay arrangement needs separate, legally correct treatment of holiday pay.

Contributions added to nanny pay

A private household paying domestic staff in cash or kind generally has to account for social insurance through the cantonal compensation office where the household is located. A simplified procedure may suit certain small employments.

In 2026 the employer share for AHV/IV/EO is 5.3 percent and unemployment insurance is 1.1 percent up to CHF 148,200 insured annual pay. In the example that is CHF 232.96 a month, taking the known subtotal to CHF 3,872.96. It is not the complete employer cost.

  • Employee shares are withheld from gross pay and remitted with employer shares.
  • Family allowance fund and administration charges vary by fund.
  • Payslips should separate gross pay, deductions, pay in kind and net pay.

Plan accident insurance and occupational pension

An employed nanny needs mandatory occupational accident cover. Below eight weekly hours with the same employer it covers occupational accidents and diseases; from eight hours, the household-employment leaflet also requires non-occupational cover. The employer pays the occupational premium, while the non-occupational premium may generally be charged to the employee.

Mandatory occupational pension cover may apply when annual pay exceeds CHF 22,680 in 2026, subject to exceptions. No universal percentage gives a reliable cost. Age, insured salary and the pension plan affect contributions, so obtain a quotation.

Why there is no blanket nanny minimum wage

The federal standard contract for domestic work sets minimum wages for certain household roles, but excludes people mainly responsible for childcare. Its pay table therefore cannot automatically be applied to every nanny.

For a mixed childcare and household role, the job title alone does not decide coverage. Record the actual main duties and check cantonal rules and the contract. Pay still needs to reflect the role and qualifications even where no specific federal minimum applies.

Treat pay in kind and source tax correctly

For a live-in nanny, accommodation and meals may form part of gross pay. The 2026 AHV values are CHF 345 a month for accommodation and CHF 990 for full board and lodging. These are social-insurance values, not market rent; benefits and any deduction belong in the written agreement.

For an employee liable to source tax, the employer withholds and remits the tax. In Zurich the rate depends on factors including gross income, civil status, eligible children and religion. It is not a flat employer cost and must not be guessed from nationality.

Complete the family budget

Begin with monthly gross pay and the known employer shares. Add confirmed amounts for the family allowance fund, administration, occupational accident and any pension cover. Keep travel, meals during duties, training and paid on-call periods as separate lines when relevant.

In the example, CHF 3,872.96 includes only gross pay plus 6.4 percent known employer contributions. The total becomes reliable after the missing quotations arrive. Your childcare profile can bring hours, days and planning budget together before you optionally submit an enquiry.

  • Set the schedule and paid time.
  • Agree gross pay and pay model in writing.
  • Contact the fund, accident insurer and pension provider where needed.
  • Keep variable expenses and replacement cover separate.
  • Review the budget when hours, pay or status changes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a nanny cost per month in Switzerland?

It depends on agreed gross pay and hours. Calculate hourly pay × weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12, then add employer contributions, family allowance, administration, accident insurance and any occupational pension.

Which employer contributions apply in 2026?

A plan can include 5.3 percent AHV/IV/EO and 1.1 percent unemployment insurance up to CHF 148,200. Variable costs still need to be added.

Does the domestic-work minimum apply to every nanny?

No. The 2026 federal standard contract excludes people mainly responsible for childcare. Mixed roles require a review of duties, canton and contract.

Must a family insure its nanny against accidents?

Yes, for occupational accidents and diseases. From eight weekly hours with the same household, the household leaflet also requires non-occupational cover.

When does a nanny need a pension fund?

Mandatory occupational pension cover may apply when 2026 annual pay exceeds CHF 22,680, subject to exceptions. The contribution depends on the plan and individual circumstances.

Your next step

A dependable nanny budget shows every known line and every amount still open. Set hours, duties and assumed gross pay first, then add official statements and quotations. That turns a rough number into a useful basis for ongoing private childcare.
