Nanny or Nursery in Zurich: Compare the Cost for Your Whole Family
An hourly wage and a nursery day rate are not a fair comparison. Three worked examples and a budget worksheet show which figures belong together.

Your budget, your figures
Calculate nanny costs and compare a nursery quote
Change the hours and gross pay. You can add a nursery quote as a monthly total for your family. No registration or contact details required.
- Monthly gross pay
- CHF 3'640.00
- Employer AHV/IV/EO contribution
- CHF 192.92
- Employer unemployment contribution
- CHF 40.04
- Known monthly subtotal
- CHF 3'872.96
Other costs remain unknown. Add family allowance contributions, administration, accident insurance, pension contributions where applicable and other agreed costs.
To compare, enter the additional employer costs and the actual total nursery quote for the same care hours.
The nursery figure must cover your confirmed fees after any subsidies and all places needed. Subsidies are not calculated here. Budget separately for one-off placement fees, additional thirteenth-month salaries and special supplements.
Budget assumptions and sourcesThe short answer
Compare the complete monthly nursery quote for all children with the full employer budget for a nanny covering the same hours. Include paid time, employer costs, expenses and a separate backup budget. Deduct only confirmed support. A second child may narrow the gap, but does not automatically make a nanny cheaper.
CHF 30 an hour and CHF 120 a day look easy to compare. In practice, those figures may cover different hours, numbers of children and services. An apparently cheaper arrangement changes price if an hour is missing every evening.
This guide is for families deciding between home care and nursery, called Kita locally. It offers a transparent method rather than a supposed standard Zurich price. The examples use invented assumptions, not recommended wages or available quotes. Our separate nanny budget guide owns the detailed payroll discussion.

The comparison measures monthly cash needs for the same coverage. Public sources establish billing and support context; every figure in the family scenarios is labelled as an assumption.
- Equal coverage: Both options must cover the same days, handovers and necessary early or late hours.
- All children: Add actual charges and discounts rather than multiplying one child’s fee.
- Pay basis: Use gross pay and clearly defined paid hours.
- Extra costs: Separate employer costs, expenses, backup and one-off charges.
- Support: Use only confirmed amounts for the specific municipality and place.
- Period: Separate monthly budgeting from upfront cash, then check the annual picture.
Zurich nursery costs: ask for the monthly bill
Request the monthly amount for your actual days and each child’s age. Ask about meals, nappies, settling in, extra hours, closures and notice. Record whether an enrolment fee is a final expense or whether a deposit is refundable.
The City of Zurich uses a monthly factor of 4.0 in its nursery calculation; private unsubsidised fees are set by the provider. Do not automatically multiply every day rate by 52/12. Use the written monthly quote.
One verifiable example: Kinderkrippe Spielchischte in Zurich-Fluntern publishes January 2026 full-day fees of CHF 128 or CHF 145 depending on the age category. These are one provider’s fees, not market averages. They illustrate why your enquiry needs the child’s age.

A nanny budget is more than an hourly wage
Start with agreed gross pay. In an annualised model, paid weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 can produce a monthly planning figure. That assumption only works if holidays and paid absences are correctly included in the pay arrangement. For a monthly salary, use the agreed amount directly.
Add employer contributions, insurance, pension where applicable, payroll administration and agreed expenses. Employee deductions are already contained within gross pay; do not add them again as an extra employer charge. Actual obligations and amounts need checking for the specific employment arrangement.
A placement fee is a separate startup cost, as is additional equipment if required. The nanny’s paid holiday and replacement care may create costs at the same time. Give backup its own line rather than quietly assuming it will be free.

Budget worksheet: equal hours, separate cost lines
Copy this worksheet and complete it using two written offers. Keep unknown amounts visible. Zero means you have checked that no charge applies; it should not stand in for a missing answer.
The nanny monthly total is gross pay + actual employer costs + expenses + backup budget. The nursery total is confirmed parental fees for every child + extras + additional early, late or replacement care. Do not deduct a subsidy twice if it is already reflected in the parental fee.

Three examples: one child, two children and confirmed support
Each example assumes 20 paid hours a week and CHF 30 gross per hour. The calculation is 20 × 52 ÷ 12 × 30 = CHF 2,600 monthly gross pay. Add an arbitrary planning allowance of 15%, or CHF 390, and CHF 100 expenses: CHF 3,090. The 15% is not a statutory contribution rate or a verified insurance quote.
The hypothetical monthly nursery quotes are CHF 1,200 for one child, CHF 2,400 for two, or CHF 1,400 for two after assumed confirmed support. None represents a real entitlement. All scenarios assume compatible hours and unchanged nanny pay for two children, which would need checking in an actual offer.
Backup care, one-off fees, deposits and tax effects are explicitly excluded from these base totals. Add them separately for your decision. The table demonstrates the arithmetic rather than making a complete recommendation for a real family.
| Scenario | Nanny | Nursery | Additional nanny cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| One child, no support | 3,090 | 1,200 | 1,890 |
| Two children, no support | 3,090 | 2,400 | 690 |
| Two children, assumed confirmed support | 3,090 | 1,400 | 1,690 |

Five additional paid hours a week add CHF 650 gross per month in this example. With the same hypothetical 15% allowance, the increase is CHF 747.50 if expenses remain unchanged. A small daily gap can therefore matter more than a modest nursery discount.
The arithmetic break-even point is a complete nursery bill of CHF 3,090, provided both options have equal additional costs. That does not establish a general rule from two or three children onwards. An older child may need only afternoons, sibling discounts may apply and a nanny may agree different pay for the larger role.
Calculate a second week for school holidays and a transition period with overlapping payments. Notice terms can mean paying for the previous arrangement while the new one starts. Divide annual costs by twelve for planning, but also record which month the cash actually leaves your account.
Subsidies: residence and the confirmed place matter
Zurich’s official page describes two required confirmations: the contribution factor and the subsidisable scope of care. Check before the contract starts; unconfirmed assistance is not dependable income in a budget.
The City’s preschool support concerns nurseries and childminding families. Do not transfer a calculated nursery contribution to a privately employed nanny. Families living outside the city should check the local rules directly with their municipality.
Compare actual payments before any possible tax effect. A deduction is not a refund of the same amount. If you need an after-tax comparison, have the impact checked for your circumstances and the relevant tax year.

Before agreeing: match the budget to the actual week
Mark every uncovered quarter-hour on your schedule. Ask who covers it and at what cost. A cheaper arrangement that cannot handle a necessary collection does not meet the need. Equally, extra flexibility only has value if you need it and the contract provides it.
Get written answers on monthly payments, startup costs, notice, holidays, illness and changes. If nursery covers the entire week for less, that is a useful outcome of the comparison. If home care fits better, our childcare profile can prepare an enquiry without promising available staff or placement.
Frequently asked questions
Is a nanny cheaper than nursery for two children?
Not automatically. The gap may narrow, but pay, hours, sibling discounts and confirmed support change the result. Compare complete offers for the actual schedule.
How much does nursery cost in Zurich?
There is no single price for every family and private provider. Request the monthly fee for the child’s age, booked days and confirmed assistance. One published day rate is not a Zurich average.
Can I multiply the nursery day rate by 4.33?
Only if that billing model applies to the offer. The City of Zurich uses 4.0 in its nursery calculation. Take the monthly figure from the actual agreement.
Is a 15% employer allowance reliable?
The 15% used here is an arbitrary example assumption. It does not replace checks of contributions, insurance and pension costs. Replace it with the actual figures before deciding.
Which costs are easily overlooked?
Extra early or late hours, backup, settling in, expenses and overlapping payments during notice. Also distinguish final startup fees from a refundable deposit.
Your next step
The cheaper arrangement is the one whose complete price matches the week you actually need. Obtain monthly quotes, keep unknowns visible and run the calculation again with the assumptions that have the greatest impact.
