Live-in nanny in Switzerland: costs, rules and family life

What families should settle before employment: private space, genuine time off, a clear contract and total compensation.

The short answer

A live-in nanny lives in the family home but remains an employee with defined hours and a private life. Accommodation replaces neither pay nor genuine time off. Families should put the private room, working and on-call periods, night interruptions, meals, visitors, travel and compensation in writing. Live-in works only when proximity and reliable boundaries can coexist.

A live-in nanny in Switzerland is not round-the-clock childcare. Living on site can make early or late care easier, but quickly blurs work, presence and free time when the contract promises only flexibility.

This family guide supports the live-in versus live-out decision. It does not automatically apply rules for live-in care of frail adults to childcare. SECO materials offer valuable planning principles but the model itself is not binding; the employment model, canton and contract remain decisive.

Four tests for a fair live-in arrangement

We combine official Swiss sources with practical home and work planning. When a source concerns another type of care, we label the transfer as a contract principle rather than universal nanny law.

  • Employment model: Direct employment, staff leasing and au pair arrangements are separated because rules may differ.
  • Time boundaries: Active work, agreed presence and fully free time are described and recorded separately.
  • Private space: Accommodation is checked for privacy, locked storage, bathroom use, internet and house rules.
  • Total compensation: Cash pay, pay in kind, insurance, travel and special duties are separate contract items.

When live-in fits and when live-out is better

Live-in may suit a hard-to-reach location, regular very early starts or late finishes, or coherent work blocks surrounded by long free periods. Accommodation must offer real value to the nanny, not merely secure permanent availability.

Live-out is often clearer when the family needs set daytime hours, lacks true private space or would struggle to avoid requests outside the plan. Living in does not automatically make short split shifts or spontaneous calls fair.

Privacy starts with a room of one's own

The Zurich leaflet refers to a private apartment or room for a live-in nanny. The contract should go further: exclusive use, key, lockable storage, bathroom and kitchen access, internet, laundry, cleaning and quiet periods.

House rules should be mutual and proportionate. Discuss visitors, post, smoking, pets, shared meals, family rooms and times without interruption. Agree that the private retreat will be entirely free of cameras and monitoring. Have any monitoring of shared areas reviewed for employment and data-protection compliance before installation.

  • View the private room before signing.
  • Put access and keys in writing.
  • Respect off-duty time inside the home.
  • Provide secure storage for documents.
  • Plan move-out and handover at the end.

Separate working time, on-call presence and free time

Active childcare, journeys, children's meals and agreed household tasks are work. A period when the nanny must remain at home and respond is not free time. Night interruptions should be recorded even when brief.

The SECO model for live-in care of frail people distinguishes active work and presence time with graded compensation. It is not automatically binding for a child-focused nanny. Its core principle still belongs in a clear contract: define each time category, response expected, recording and pay. Fully free time means the nanny may leave and decline an intervention.

Calculate accommodation, cash pay and total cost separately

Accommodation and meals may be pay in kind and then form part of contributory gross pay. The 2026 AHV values are CHF 345 a month for accommodation and CHF 990 for full board and lodging. They are not market rent and do not justify a unilateral deduction from agreed cash pay.

Build a package showing gross pay, expressly agreed pay in kind, employer contributions, accident insurance and any occupational pension. Add work travel, family trips, nights or weekends only where the role includes them. Living in alone does not determine a credible market salary; detailed arithmetic belongs in the budget guide.

Set employment model, work status and contract before move-in

First identify the employer. SECO explains that direct employment by a household and certain three-party staff-leasing arrangements are not covered by the Employment Act in the same way. That does not make hours unlimited; cantonal standard contracts and Swiss employment-contract law remain relevant.

EU/EFTA nationals need a valid basis to work and, depending on duration, notification or a residence permit. Third-country admission is much more restricted. Offering a room creates no right to work. Also distinguish a professional nanny from an au pair, which Zurich describes as a time-limited language-exchange model with its own conditions.

  • Name employer and workplace.
  • Describe main duties and responsibility.
  • Set work, presence and free time.
  • List cash pay, pay in kind and expenses.
  • Coordinate termination and move-out notice.

Discuss shared daily life before the start

Who buys food? Are shared meals expected or optional? When does each person use the kitchen, bathroom, laundry and car? Who pays travel when the nanny accompanies the family for work? What happens when the family travels and no work is available?

Set a short weekly work check-in and a separate time for household questions, so every private evening does not become a performance review. The free family hiring workbook helps structure weekly coverage, interview questions, trial observations and employer tasks before you add accommodation and needs to the childcare profile.

Frequently asked questions

Is a live-in nanny available 24 hours a day?

No. Living in does not create permanent work or on-call duties. Active work, agreed presence, night interruptions and genuine free time must be separated and recorded.

Does a live-in nanny need a private room?

The Zurich comparison leaflet provides for a private apartment or room. Exclusive use, keys, bathroom access, internet, quiet and house rules should also be agreed.

Can a family deduct accommodation from pay?

Accommodation may be agreed as pay in kind. The 2026 AHV value of CHF 345 a month is a contribution value, not market rent or permission for a unilateral deduction.

Does the SECO live-in model directly govern nannies?

Not automatically. It mainly concerns workers living with frail people and is not binding by itself. Its separation of work, presence and free time is still useful contract design.

What is the difference between live-in and au pair?

A live-in nanny is an employee whose accommodation forms part of the arrangement. An au pair is a time-limited language and cultural exchange with distinct limits.

Your next step

Live-in works when proximity is not confused with availability. Suitable private space, recorded time, genuine time off and transparent total compensation protect both sides. Describe those conditions in the childcare profile before sending an optional live-in enquiry.
